The American Dream — Featuring Sheila Deng

Born and raised in Fujian, China, Sheila Deng wanted to explore different opportunities in her life, so she came to the US to attend college. While pursuing an Accounting degree in 1995, she worked in the school cafeteria and learned to speak English.

Sheila believes the “American dream” is achieved through sacrifice, risk-taking and hard work, rather than by chance. To her, this dream was always about being able to live a life she worked hard to create and sharing that with her family. She and her husband enjoy their life in the Northwest, where their two daughters were born and raised.

Because Sheila’s American dream came true, she is inspired to help others achieve their dreams, too. “As an immigrant,” Sheila says, “I want to encourage diversity and acceptance of different cultural backgrounds.” Part of her influence is through volunteer work.

Sheila was looking for a place she could feel a connection and watch someone grow, and says she found Great Life Mentoring to be “the perfect opportunity” for her. She finds the experience of being a mentor fulfilling. In fact, she says she is happier when giving to others.

Once a week, Sheila gets together with the child she mentors. She likes to be creative in finding fun activities for them. They both like arts and crafts, reading and playing games. They've even danced a bit together. Dance is something both Sheila and her friend enjoy.

Sheila has spent years learning things like photography, yoga, tennis and dance. She’s done over six years of belly dance lessons alone, which includes group performances on stage.

Working from home, Sheila has been able to pursue her many interests, including finding new recipes and cooking for her family. Her very full life is all about being kind and caring for others.

When she thinks about the rewards of her Great Life Mentoring experience, Sheila says there is one particular accomplishment that stands out: Her friend feels very comfortable with her and told her, “I feel brave when I am with you.”

Sheila’s sacrifice, risk-taking and hard work have not only paid off for her, but for those around her as well.
