Someone in the World Likes You!
One of our girls was referred from her therapist with Social Anxiety Disorder and Disruptive Mood Dysregulation. The therapist believed a Great Life mentor would help her client to build confidence in social settings and do calming activities to help her self-soothe. She was right.
Early on, the girl told us. “my family thinks I’m rude because I use to be hyper, and my mom’s boyfriend doesn't like me.” She said she didn’t like to interact with others because of her social anxiety. But, more and more that is changing and this girl is becoming comfortable in social settings. She has a mentor who thinks she is wonderful. Imagine the power of feeling like there is someone in the world who likes you. Henry Ford said, “My best friend is the one who brings out the best in me.”
The girl and her mentor celebrated her birthday by making sushi and birthday cake together at the program's kitchen. She told her mentor it was the most excited she's ever been for a birthday because she’s never had a party with things that she actually likes. This was a party of two, but still a party!
After a year together the girl talked about how excited she is for this school year because she is more motivated to do good than she had been in past years. When her mentor asked what she planned on doing differently, the girl said that she wanted to become organized and stay organized; and that in the past she hadn’t cared enough to want to do well.
This young girl regularly thanks her mentor for spending time with her. She likes that her mentor doesn’t judge her. She said, "I'm happy you're my mentor. You're not like other people. I trust you and you don't think I'm annoying. You’re my best friend.”
“A friend is what the heart needs, all the time.” Henry VanDyke
